Christchurch’s Linwood College plans to create a digital classroom, with the help of a $55,000 donation from the Israeli Government.

Israel’s Foreign Affairs Ministry made the donation after the February earthquake.
Linwood College principal Margaret Paiti said she intended to set up a digital learning centre of excellence.

It would be a fully digital classroom for year 9 pupils who would be taught their core subjects in the class from next year. The school also planned to link up, via video conferencing, with a Tel Aviv high school.

An Israeli embassy spokeswoman in Wellington said the money was originally for a cultural festival, which had been planned for May 15.

However, the embassy cancelled the festival after the February quake, which claimed three Israelis.
‘‘We felt a far more appropriate gesture would be to invest the money we had put aside in a sustainable project earmarked for the people of Christchurch.”
