Shechita update: community initiates legal proceedings
Message:
The Auckland and Wellington Hebrew Congregations, with the support of the New Zealand Jewish Council, have now filed legal proceedings in the High Court in Wellington challenging the Government’s ban on shechita.
I would like to thank you for your patience while we have worked our way through this issue. We believe it was our duty to protect our community’s interests by first exhausting non-legal options before committing to the cost and time of legal action.
Donations
Legal action comes at a cost. The preservation of Shechita is essential for the preservation of Jewish life in NZ. Our Court case is predicated on the right to be able to practise our religion, and the potential erosion of that right affects us all regardless of the degree to which we observe. The New Zealand Jewish Council has set up a bank account to receive donations for the legal fund. Every donation received, no matter how big or small, shows the support our community has. Please contribute any amount you are able, and encourage friends and family to contribute as well. Donations can be made to the following bank account (please use your family name and initials as the reference): Wellington Regional Jewish Council 06-0501-0598178-01.
We will be back in touch when we have something new to report. In the meantime, David Zwartz will be the community’s spokesperson on the issue and any media enquiries can be referred to him at 04 475 7622 or 0274 757 722.
Thank you again for your patience and for your support.
